Classic Catalogue Search Tips: Scores and Solo Music

Scores: Using Sofia, add the term Scores to your search: example: Symphonies and Scores.

For works by a particular composer, add the name to your search terms: example: Mozart and Symphonies and Scores

Solo music: Use the instrument name: example: Violin music

We also have scores and solo music available on CD-ROM (choral, voice, piano and strings). For a complete list of titles and composers in this series, search the Sofia using terms: CD sheet music.

Find Books and Scores

BOOKS, SCORES AND COURSE RESERVES

The main collection of books, scores and DVDs are located in the Library Learning Commons basement. CDs are on the second floor.

All music items are assigned numbers using the Library of Congress Classification System beginning with the letter M (see box on right).

Each citation retrieved from an online search will have a Call Number and Location, which is like an "address" that appears on each item's label identifying its place within the collection. Note this call number to find it on the shelves.

1. Sofia. The easiest way to start is to use the Sofia search box on the library's home page. This "one-stop shopping" search will retrieve citations to items from our catalogue and most of our databases, including books/ebooks, journal articles, scores, CDs, DVDs and streaming audio. Limit your results by using the Refine Your Search" or "Content Type" options on the left of your screen. A Sofia search is most effective for very narrow or unique topics.

Keywords: Use Keyword to start, especially if you are unsure of an author, composer, performer, subject, etc. You can combine several terms: for example, "Mozart" and "Nozze di Figaro".

Click the title for full display, which will yield more information such as Tables of Contents or Subjects: (example: Rock music - 1961-1970 - History and criticism).

Scores: Using Keyword Search, under the drop-down menu for Format (bottom right-hand corner), choose Scores, then continue your keyword search.
