Searching Books at Bishop's

PRINT BOOKS

To find books you will need to use Sofia.

You can search Sofia by keywords, author, book title or subject.

If you use Advanced Search, you can also browse the catalogue by subject. The Library Learning Commons uses the Library of Congress (LC) Classification System.  To know if you are using the right LC subject heading or to find subject headings relating to your research topic use Library of Congress Subject Headings search box.

The following are some Sociology LC subject headings:

SEARCHING TIP: If you have found a book through a keyword search or just by chance in Sofia, you can locate other books on the same topic by clicking on the title of the book and locating other subject headings in the book's record. Choose a subject heading that best suits your research needs and click on it to be taken to other resources that are on that topic.

Locating Books by Call Number

Sociology books can be found in the basement of the Library Learning Commons.  All books have call numbers on their spine which act like "addresses" that identify the location and subject area of each book on the shelf.  You can browse the call number location and find books on a specific topic.

Call number and corresponding classification/subject:

HMSociology (General)

HN Social history and conditions. Social problems. Social reform.

HQ The family, marriage and women

HS Societies: secret, benevolent, etc.

HT– Communities.  Class. Race.

HV – Social pathology, Social and public welfare. Criminology.

HX Socialism, Communism, Anarchism.

Click here for a breakdown of each subclass.
