What is a citation?
- a brief reference to a book, article, website, etc. with the complete information needed to identify and locate the work.
- it generally includes the name of the author(s), title, publication, date, and page number(s)
- writers use citations to inform readers that certain information in their work came from other sources. This includes ideas as well as direct quotations. By giving credit to the original authors, students avoid plagiarism (see left).
MLA (Modern Language Association) is the preferred citation style for humanities, but other styles such as APA may be used as well. Check first with your professor.
Use the style guide links listed on the right for help with references and works cited.
