What is a citation?
- a brief reference to a book, article, website, etc. with the complete information needed to identify and locate the work.
- it generally includes the name of the author(s), title, publication, date, and page number(s)
- writers use citations to inform readers that certain information in their work came from other sources. This includes ideas as well as direct quotations. By giving credit to the original authors, students avoid plagiarism (see left).
Chicago style is the preferred citation style for music, but MLA (Modern Language Association) may be used as well. Check first with your professor.
