Cite your Sources

What is a citation?

- a brief reference to a book, article, website, etc. with the complete information needed to identify and locate the work.

- it generally includes the name of the author(s), title, publication, date, and page number(s)

- writers use citations to inform readers that certain information in their work came from other sources. This includes ideas as well as direct quotations. By giving credit to the original authors, students avoid plagiarism (see left).

There are many styles used in the Sciences, such as APA and IEEE. Always check first with your professor and be consistent with the style you choose.
